Philippine Education today...

It’s been years now since the start of the debate as to what the real reason for our deteriorating quality education! And year after year we don’t stop talking about it, in this article I’ll try to point out some reason(s) why and to possibly answer the following questions;

1.    Factor(s) affecting our educational system?
2.    Can we really combat educational problem?
3.    How can we help?

Community factors:

Education systems dates back from years even before Jesus Christ, as we always say education starts at a very familiar place – that is our home! Family as we all know is the very basic foundation of a society and mind you the very first mentor of our soon to be pupils! We all know there are different families according to race, attitude, financial status, geographical location, environment, family size and beliefs!

You might say so what! But this difference greatly affects the education of our children most especially financial status, location and family size! First, financial status – it is common knowledge that a huge number of families could not even afford to eat a decent meal that is 3 times a day much more to send their child to go to school? If only our government could create more jobs for our countrymen with a decent salary enough to feed an average size family then they would not even think twice sending their child to school.

Second, location – still more family lives in remote or as to other far-flung places but guess what! You who owns expensive wheels, cellphone, clothing and jewelries are not the only one entitled to better (if there is) education! We have seen in many occasions teachers walk miles of miles of boondocks just to teach our tribal community for their children to learn the basic of oral communication and simple arithmetic! If we can only train some of their population so they can help in teaching in their community or atleast to help fund our heroic mentors who despite the hardship and long enduring walk they still choose to teach in that far-flung community! If we can only lure more tribesmen to study and help in their community it may atleast lessen the burden of our mentors.

Third, family size – if we can only educate more, the parents and soon to be parents to plan their families and see to it that their children is parallel to their earnings it might solve or lessen the impact of having a big number of family to their child’s education! If only the church leader would study, analyze the problem of increasing population and see it in an economist/leader way rather than holistic way, we may have a chance to have a holistic child with a holistic education under their belt.

Government Factors:

The Philippine budget for education 3.3% or approx. 126 billion! (Correct me if I’m wrong) Who might say wow that’s how big our country’s budget for education is? I don’t want to spoil your excitement but my dear countrymen other Asian countries are spending – 74% and 40% for Malaysia and Thailand!

Bottom line is, were not really spending that much for our education system! If we can only allocate more funds for our education system that our students would use and not for other government officers bank accounts. If only our government would spend much to education and not to graft and corruption we could at least level the playing field! I just hope our government officials could read this!

Department of Education / Teacher Factors:

In reality if we could only initiate a private sponsored survey without the help of our teachers and without them besides our students we can get the real and accurate figures! Why? Well for one reason and one reason alone – teachers are good cheaters!
I know lots of teachers out there would raise their eyebrows with this remarks! But as the story in the bible of the woman who committed adultery – Jesus told them “those who don’t have sins be the first one to cast stone to her!” I now ask you those who have not cheated their records be the first one to send me a comment/violent reactions to this article!

Yes, I regret to tell this for I’m a teacher also but we don’t really get the accurate results we want because of the tradition in the department! What they supply is what we need to know not what we want to know! They intentionally alter record to suite the taste of the high ranks for the image of the Philippines, of the Filipinos! But in reality are we really helping in protecting our countrymen’s image?

Teachers from the root word teach – To cause to know something, to guide the studies and to impart the knowledge! - The Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

I took the liberty of finding the definition of teach! Come to think of it the Department of Education (DepED) does not hire teachers anymore I don’t know since when but definitely NOT! NONE! The Department of Education announces sometime ago that they hired thousands of teachers and again hired thousands of teachers this year! In title yes maybe but in reality the answer is NO! why?

Because we don’t see their teachers teaching our students; our children! Oh yes pardon me they do teach twice a day or maybe less, thinking and assuming on the premise that since they go to school everyday 7AM in the morning and go home 5PM in the afternoon you might think what the hell their doing during office hours right? Don’t be hysterical yet here’s why, PAPER WORKS and lots of it! True they are teachers but with the volume of paper works assigned to them they could hardly open their lesson plan, with the volume of paper works they could hardly study their lesson for the day, with the volume of paper works they could hardly notice its already 5PM and time to go home, with the volume of paper works one would ask are they really teachers or secretaries? Did the Department of Education hired them to teach or do volume of paper works? You know what until this very moment I’m still thinking the logical answer to that question! Any thing to say DepED Sec. Lapus?

If you would ask me if I’m happy to be a teacher? The answer is YES! Definitely! Despite all the problems we face everyday, just to be able to teach a couple of students would surely make a small difference to the society... to our country!
